Compression Garment Closures Explained: Zippers, Hooks and Pull-On

By DirectDermaCare · Updated October 27, 2026

The compression garments on our site close in four main ways: zippers, hook-and-eye fasteners, hook-and-loop (Velcro) closures, or no closure at all on pull-on styles. Many combine two, such as a side zipper with padded hook-and-eye closures. If your clinician has specified a closure, match it; otherwise, compare how each type goes on, adjusts and sits against your body.

This guide uses wording from manufacturer pages and our own listings. It describes features only; your surgical team decides which garment you wear and when.

Closures at a glance

Closure How listings describe it What to check Example on our site
Zipper “Full-length side zippers”; “one side zipper; the garment opens completely” Side or front, one or two, padded or not Raineywear Smart Fit SF-WM1
Hook-and-eye “Adjustable front hook-and-eye closure” Front or side, and how many rows Raineywear MV vest; Smart Fit SF-WM2
Zipper with hook-and-eye “Full side zippers with padded hook-and-eye closures” Where the zipper and hooks sit, and whether they are padded ContourMD Style 4
Hook-and-loop “Fastens anywhere on the stretch material”; “individual hook-and-loop panel closures” One closure or separate panels, and laundry care ContourMD Style 13 and Style 70 binders
Pull-on “Easy pull-on design” No closure to adjust, so measure carefully Raineywear Smart Fit SF-WM3

Zippers

On the listings we checked, zippers run down the sides or the front. ContourMD Style 34FLZ has full-length side zippers, and the Style 22 listing says its single side zipper lets the garment open completely. ContourMD describes the side zippers on its Style 28Z as being “for easy on-and-off.” Raineywear’s Smart Fit SF-WM1 mid-body suit also has side zippers.

Front zippers appear on several ContourMD body shapers; Style 27B and Style 32, for example, list a front padded zipper. When you compare zippered styles, check whether there is one zipper or two, whether it runs the full length, and whether it is padded or combined with hooks.

Hook-and-eye closures

A hook-and-eye closure fastens with small hooks that catch on matching eyes. Raineywear lists an adjustable front hook-and-eye closure on garments such as its MV vest and MFS suit, and its Smart Fit SF-WM2 mid-body suit has a front hook-and-eye closure.

If a hook-and-eye closure has more than one row of eyes, ask your clinical team which row they want you to use.

Zippers combined with hook-and-eye

Many ContourMD girdles combine the two. Style 4, for example, lists full side zippers with padded hook-and-eye closures, and Styles 1, 2, 3, 5, 26 and 46 list similar side zipper and padded hook-and-eye closures. The listings do not describe how the zipper and hooks fasten together, so if that matters to you, check the product photos or ask us before ordering.

Hook-and-loop (Velcro) closures

On our site, hook-and-loop closures appear on garments such as binders, bandeaus, chin straps and chin-and-neck bandages. ContourMD’s Style 13 binder has a hook-and-loop closure that fastens anywhere on the stretch material. The Style 70 binder instead has individual hook-and-loop panel closures, so its panels adjust separately.

For washing, follow the care label supplied with your garment; the ContourMD listings on our site give the same instruction. For binder height and circumference, see our binder vs. body shaper guide.

Front-closure bras

Recovery bras use the same closure types at the front. The Carefix Bella has a front hook-and-eye closure, ContourMD’s Style 40 has a front zipper, and ContourMD Style 43 has a front hook-and-loop closure. Some bras close at both front and back; ContourMD Style 30 lists Z-hook closures in both places. Our recovery bra shopping guide covers coverage, bands and sizing.

Pull-on styles

A pull-on garment has no zipper or hooks to open. Raineywear describes its Smart Fit SF-WM3 mid-body suit as having an easy pull-on design.

There is nothing to loosen or tighten, so compare your measurements carefully with the chart on the listing. MedlinePlus, writing about compression stockings, notes that they can be hard to put on and suggests aids such as rubber dishwashing gloves. Ask your clinical team whether a pull-on style is practical for you.

One style family, three closures

Raineywear’s Smart Fit mid-body suits show how the closure can change within one family: SF-WM1 has side zippers, SF-WM2 a front hook-and-eye closure, and SF-WM3 a pull-on design. All three let you select waist and hip sizes independently. The listing titles also include Raineywear’s step numbers, which are part of the manufacturer’s product names; your clinical team decides which garment you wear.

Pressure points and comfort checks

Check where each closure sits. Many ContourMD listings describe padded closures, using phrases such as “padded hook-and-eye side zipper closures” and “front padded zipper.” If your clinician has asked you to keep pressure off a particular area, compare the closure position with those instructions before ordering.

MedlinePlus advises not letting compression stockings bunch up or wrinkle. The same check is worth making along a zipper or row of hooks when you try a garment on.

Before you order

  • Match any closure your clinician specified.
  • Read the garment details for the closure position: front, side or both.
  • Check whether the listing describes the closure as adjustable.
  • Measure against the chart on that listing, especially for pull-on styles.
  • Read the care label for fastener and washing instructions.

Our guide to choosing a compression garment size explains measuring. DirectDermaCare accepts compression garments back after a try-on as long as they are not visibly worn; see the return policy for the full terms.
