How to Introduce New Skincare, One Step at a Time
By DirectDermaCare · Updated October 17, 2026
A new skincare routine should be easy to follow and easy to understand. Start with one change, give yourself a chance to notice how it feels, and add the next step only when you are comfortable. Buying a routine together does not mean you need to start every product on the same day.
Test a new product before full use
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends trying a small amount on a limited area, such as the underside of your arm, before using a product more broadly. Its general method is twice daily for seven to ten days, using the amount and contact time you normally would. For a rinse-off product, follow the label's rinse-off directions. Do not use an exfoliating or other active formula more often than its own directions permit.
If redness, itching, swelling or another reaction develops, wash the product off and stop using it. Seek medical advice for a severe or persistent reaction. A home test cannot guarantee that a product will never cause irritation and is different from diagnostic patch testing by a clinician. Read the AAD's guide to testing skincare products.
Build around the products you already tolerate
Keep the rest of your routine familiar when introducing something new. If you are replacing both your cleanser and moisturizer, start with one replacement. That makes your experience easier to interpret than changing several products at once.
For a simple DDC routine, compare Hydrating Facial Cleanser and Soothing Emulsion. The cleanser is a rinse-off foaming formula; the emulsion is a lightweight moisturizer used after cleansing and any serum. Read both ingredient lists before choosing them.
Add a serum when you have a reason for it
If your basic routine feels comfortable and you want an extra hydration step, read about Hyaluronic Acid Serum. Its directions call for two to three drops after cleansing, followed by moisturizer. If your interest is a more even-looking complexion, compare Niacinamide Vitamin Boost Serum. You can choose one without committing to a shelf of serums.

Treat active formulas as a separate decision
Night Renewal Creme, Glycolic Acid Serum and Collagen & Retinol Serum have specific precautions. Their DDC directions advise against layering these products together in the same evening. Read the complete directions and suitability information before adding any of them. If you use prescription skin treatments, ask your clinician how a new active formula would fit.
Keep a simple routine note
Write down the product name, the date you first used it, how often you used it and how your skin felt. These practical notes can help you decide whether to keep a step, simplify your routine or discuss a reaction with a clinician. A product feeling stronger or tingling more does not mean you need more of it.
When you are ready to order, DDC skincare includes free standard U.S. shipping with estimated delivery in 8–14 business days from the date you order. Review delivery details and return conditions.
If you are still deciding what to start with, explore your options in the DDC skincare finder. Choose a few useful steps and introduce them one at a time.
